FFTA Statement on the White House Executive Order on Fostering the Future for American Children & Families

Today, Treva Johnson, FFTA’s Director of Public Policy, joined the First Lady and leaders from across the country at the White House for the signing of the Executive Order on Fostering the Future. This moment brings important national attention to the needs of young people with lived experience in foster care, and FFTA welcomes every opportunity to join with partners who are elevating these issues and driving national solutions for youth in foster care.
Children and youth are brought into the foster care system through no fault of their own. Yet regardless of the circumstances that led to their involvement—or where they live in the United States—they become all of our responsibility. From connection and emotional support to trauma-informed care and healing, from access to education to skill-building and meaningful career pathways, we must ensure that every young person has what they need to thrive. We also know these supports must extend well beyond a young adult’s 18th birthday.
Across the country, FFTA member organizations are already deeply engaged in this work every day. Just two weeks ago, FFTA highlighted the work of two member organizations that operate robust apprenticeship and job-training programs in sectors such as catering and the restaurant industry, landscaping, woodworking, and other trade skills. These programs show what is possible when providers partner with educators, workforce leaders, and major employers to create real opportunities for young adults. We appreciate the First Lady’s leadership in bringing together these same sectors at a national level to expand similar pathways for youth in every community.
We look forward to reviewing the Executive Order in detail, sharing it with our members, and gathering their insights into the impact and opportunities this national action may create for youth, families, and providers across the country.
The FFTA community stands ready to work alongside the First Lady, the Administration, bipartisan legislative partners, and most importantly, youth and families themselves to ensure their voices guide lasting, meaningful change.
As the First Lady challenged all of us today, the FFTA community stands ready to “rise above the ease of inaction” and to work together to build a future where every young person has the support, opportunity, and hope they deserve.
